This year, we welcomed over 300 new students to our Primary and Secondary Schools in Uganda.
The first day of school is a big day for every child in the world but for children in Uganda, it is truly a life-changing day. For many students, this will be the first time they have received a brand new piece of clothing, the first time they have seen educational materials and the first time they will have three nutritious meals per day. Their futures change forever from the first moment they walk through the classroom doors.
We are so excited and proud to welcome our new students!
Meet some of our new students!
Meet Agnes from Primary 1 at Mbazzi Primary School.
Agnes is 5 years old and lives in Mbazzi village with her mother, father, three sisters and one brother. Her mother works at home mum while her father is a car mechanic.
She tells us she prefers Mbazzi Primary school to my former school because "here I get to have access to a library while at my former school I never had access to one”. She enjoys that she receives porridge in the morning and a cooked lunch. The play area is also a place she likes to hang out in with her new friends during the classroom breaks.
English, Religious Education and Science are her favourite subjects she tell us because "the teachers are fun and the lessons are interesting to attend".
When she grows up, she wants to be a doctor because she would like to help people. She says her big sister also wants to become a doctor.
When she is not at school, she loves to play with her friends at home and helps her mum with the house chores like washing utensils.
Meet Isaac in Primary 4 at Mbazzi Primary School.
Isaac is 10 years old and lives in Mbazzi village with his father, stepmother, three sisters and brother. At home, he has six goats and two dogs, one named snowy and the other named blacky. Both his parents are farmers.
He tells us he loves his new school “because I have made new friends, found good teachers and enjoy my meals”. His favourite subject to study at school is Science because he gets to study about human parts and farming which really interests him.
When he is not at school, he loves to play with his friends at home and watch television.
He dream of becoming an optician when he grows up because he says “I have encountered many people that are suffering from eye problems and would like to help them solve their eye issues by treating them”.
Meet Albert in Secondary 1 at Mbazzi Secondary School.
Albert is 15 years old and lives in Mbazzi village with his father, stepmother, brother and sister. His father currently works at Nakivale refugee camp where he teaches refugees how to make shows.
He is currently lives in our boys boarding house at Mbazzi and loves it! At his previous school teachers would miss lessons, the standard of teaching was low and it was hard for them to get a cooked meal. He tells us “I love the fact that our teachers are friendly and are easily approachable too”.
His favourite subject at school is mathematics and he loves it because it is easy for him to understand since “I love dealing with figures”. When he grows up, he either wants to become a doctor or a soldier.
When he is not at school, he loves to dig in his family garden, cook and take care of his siblings. He helps clean the house, wash utensils and fetch water from the well as well.
